Theme

The theme of this project is to investigate and plan for a new international cottage in Balboa Park.

Our school, as the School of International Studies, has worked with the international cottages in Balboa Park for the last two years. We are investigating ways to benefit the international cottages and to improve our relationship with them.

Content Standards

Identify the content standards that students will learn in this project (two to three per subject).

SubjectContent StandardAssessment
English Reading 1.3: Identify Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology and use the knowledge to understand the origin and meaning of new words.

Reading 2.1: Analyze the structure and format of writing.

Literary Response and Analysis 3.2: Compare and contrast the presentation of a similar theme or topic across genres to explain how the selection of genre shapes the theme or topic.

Written and Oral English 1.4: Produce legible work that shows accurate spelling and correct use of the conventions of punctuation and capitalization.

Students will create a booklet of mythology from a country that is represented by an International Cottage in Balboa Park.
Physics 5a: students can predict voltage and current in simpler circuits

5b: Students can use Ohm's Law to solve problems

5c: students can calculate electric power

Students will complete a portfolio showing the electrical needs of their International House (including circuit diagram, list of electrical appliances, total power consumption)
Geometry Geometry Standards 8.0, 9.0 & 10.0 - Area, Pythagorean Theorem, Volume and Surface Area Students will draw a layout of the current International Cottages, calculate their area, and determine the placement for a new cottage and its area.
Virtual Enterprise B4.2 Know the components of a promotional plan (e.g., advertising, public relations, and sales promotion) and how the plan is used to achieve a stated outcome.

B2.2 Conduct market research by using a variety of methods.

B2.4 Develop a financial plan that outlines sources of capital and projects income and expenses.

Students will prepare a portfolio and presentation to their peers and business.

Driving Questions

What is the purpose of the International Cottages in Balboa Park?

What country does not have an International Cottage in Balboa Park?

Is there a large enough group in San Diego to support an International Cottage for that country?

What kind of building should be designed for an International Cottage for that country?

Significant Question

Yes, these questions allow students to directly connect to our International focus, our association with the International Cottages in Balboa Park, and our business partners.

Plan the Assessment

Step 1

Early in the Project:

Students will visit the International Cottages in Balboa Park. They will interview the hosts of the cottages and collect data on the layout of the cottages and surrounding area.

During the Project:

Students will collect demographic data from San Diego county to determine what country cottage they will plan. Students will plan and design a new cottage for Balboa Park. Students will produce materials (Books of Fables, Publicity, Informational Flyers etc.) for existing cottages.

End of the Project:

Students will present their plan and materials to their peers. Students will present their plan for a new cottage to the House of Pacific Relations. Students will present the materials that they produce for existing cottages to the appropriate boards.

Step 2

State the criteria for exemplary performance for each product

Product: School-Wide Team Building Activity - Marble Race

Criteria: Students will work cooperatively within their connections (advisory) classes to plan how to move a marble across an area they are assigned to. The connections classes will cooperate to coordinate their constructions to achieve the goal of moving a marble through each of 20 areas.

Product: Site Plan of International Cottages

Criteria: The site plan of the International Cottage will be evaluated in the students portfolio. It will be evaluated as meeting the goals set by the student and appropriate for use, or not meeting that standard.

Map the Project

Look at one major product for the project and analyze the tasks necessary to produce a high-quality product. What do students need to know and be able to do to complete the tasks successfully? How and when will they learn the necessary knowledge and skills?

Manage the Process

<List preparations necessary to address needs for differentiated instruction for EL students, special-needs students, or students with diverse learning styles.>

The project will be student directed, with students setting the goals that they are going to attain. Support will be available to help students with the process. Students will work in groups. Students understanding and achievement will be evaluated using several types of products (written, oral, graphical) to allow students to demonstrate their understanding.

How will you and your students reflect on and evaluate the project?

A portion of the students portfolio asks them to reflect on the process and product.

The teachers will meet to discuss, evaluate and revise the project during and after the project.
